What are some tricks to painting PropBlurs?

Some people have never used PropBlurs and others have used them many times. What are some tricks you use to paint your PropBlurs to make them look as realistic as possible?

It's a technique in progress, but I've been using Tamiya desert yellow with transparent earth yellow oil fanbrushed over the top. I've tried priming first with Mr. Surfacer, but I didn't see a marked improvement in adhesion. Here's the results.
